American DJ Mega Tripar Profile
I use the American DJ Mega Tripar Profile as uplighters. The main criteria for me we're small, lightweight, bright, in and out cabling on each side and a reasonably wide beam angle. At the time of buying there we're a few other similar products at a similar price but with higher power LED's. However they all had a tighter beam angle than the Tripar Pro's 40º and for use in smaller venues and marquees would have produced less of a wall and ceiling wash, so they didn't fit the bill for me.
The LED dimming is relatively smooth down at low intensity with just a bit of stepping for the first few DMX levels which is an issue some LED lights suffer from when they are driven with too low a PWM resolution (DMX data is 8 bit, but LED dimming needs conversion to at least 10 bit PWM to adjust for the non linear LED brightness at the low end of PWM dimming of LED's). For disco use this is unlikely to be a problem. The brightness is OK. Brighter would be better of course, but its fine for small and medium sized venues.
Slave Mode
If you use the American DJ Mega Tripar Profiles in master and slave mode (without a DMX controller) the manual is misleading, indicating that the slaves will simply follow the master when connected. Actually all of the connected slaves must be put in DMX mode ("A001" on the display) for it to work. If any connected Tripar Pro is not in DMX mode it will actually be transmitting DMX because it assumes it is the master and the transmitted DMX is sent out of both the DMX in and DMX out connectors causing data collisions on the DMX bus that all of the lights see. It doesn't seem to matter what channel count DMX sub mode the lights are in.
DMX Control Moan
This fixture suffers the same annoying problem as other American DJ fixtures I've come across – why can't the sound to light modes be used from DMX control? The device has the sound to light capability built in for stand alone use but when in DMX mode the feature isn't available. I wish they'd sort this silly feature loss out.
